How Do I Coach Virtually?

Kathy Perret offers three tips for coaching remotely during the 2020-21 school year. 💻

"Instructional coaching partnerships are built on a strong foundation of a trusting relationship. Now, more than ever, teachers need someone to partner with them, listen to them, and support them – even if that means virtually. . . . Think about what will work in a virtual setting. Will you need to revise anything?"

Ways to Build Relationships and Community

Christine Weis believes building relationships with teachers at the beginning of the school year drives success, and includes a few techniques while remote.

"It's going to take more effort on our part to connect with kids and their families. Make a phone call home to speak with each of your students and their parents once a week just to talk for about 5-15 minutes. This will make a huge difference in building student-teacher relationships. . . . This bond is necessary between teachers and students, as well as peers, in order to create an environment that is conducive for teaching and learning."

Keys to Increasing Student Success

Steve Barkley shares two areas teachers should focus on to make their planning more student-centered for the 2020-21 school year.

"Starting school virtually in August and September with students new to the teacher and new to each other will require purposeful planning by teachers to create an environment and expectations that maximize learning. . . . A coach's pre-conference, observation, and post conference feedback around these important teaching decisions can be extremely valuable."
